Storybook in Motion

Storybook in Motion is NZO Dance Theatre’s interactive literacy and movement program for young children and families.
Each session brings a children’s book off the page through dance, music, imaginative play, and guided movement. Young participants explore the characters, emotions, and ideas within the story while developing creativity, confidence, physical awareness, and their own relationship with movement.
For our June 2026 program, NZO company artists brought How Do Dinosaurs Say I’m Mad? to life through dinosaur-inspired shapes, emotional expression, rhythm, and collaborative movement. This program will repeat July 8th, and July 9th.
Juke joint to the Concert Stage

In February 2026, NZO Dance Theatre presented a community workshop series exploring the journey of African diasporic movement from social and communal spaces into the concert dance tradition.
Hosted at the library, the series combined cultural discussion, movement demonstrations, and audience participation. Participants learned about the relationship between African movement traditions, Black social dance, and the techniques and performance practices that continue to shape contemporary dance.
The series also included an interactive African dance class led by NZO Artistic Director Ajja Thompson. Participants explored rhythm, grounded movement, musicality, and communal expression while physically engaging with the cultural traditions discussed throughout the program.
